The second annual Davis Chopped is now over. This year’s event, held at the Davis High School culinary arts center, proved to be a huge success. Eight teams competed for the honor as Davis Chopped Champs. Each team consisted of 2 juniors or seniors who have been preparing and training for this annual event, hosted by Dea Haynie. The competition started bright and early at 8:45 with the appetizer round that included each team preparing a dish for the panel of judges. Teams had 30 minutes to prepare an appetizer. This year we had a panel of 7 judges. The first round found 4 of the 8 teams being chopped.
The Entree Round followed with the main ingredient being pork loin. The secret ingredients for this course were dijon mustard, pecan swirls,, and fresh pineapple. Nguyen Bui, Director of web services was overheard saying, “pork, it is tough to cook that right”. Each team had 45 minutes to prepare and plate their main course. In addition to Nguyen Bui, Cindy Bingman, Executive Director of Technology Services was on hand to help judge. Also judging this great event were four U.S. Army culinary specialists. Each team presented their main course to the judges for their critique. At the conclusion of the second round, three additional teams were chopped. Two teams moved forward to the dessert round. The two teams competing for the winner’s circle were V&S (Vilaykham and Shyanne) and Team “UMMMMM”(Daren and Ulises).
The final judging was tough. All of the judges conceded the decision was very difficult. After much discussion, the contestants were called back in for their final decision. Each team did a wonderful job, according the Nguyen Bui. He explained how difficult the decision was but there had to be a winner, and they crowned Team V&S that winner. Team V&S consisted of two juniors, Shyanne Alexander and Vilaykham Vongsay who were excited to win this event. Their team will now represent Davis High School in the district wide competition, set to take place on March 3rd at Davis High School. In addition, the top two teams will appear February 29th on Great Day Houston, a live television show on KHOU 11 to help promote the Aldine ISD Chopped competition event.
