The new Aerospace and Aviation Department at Davis High School has been steadily coming together since the start of the school year. As part of that, Davis Computer Maintenance students assisted Redbird Training Technology in setting up the flight simulators. The Aviation Department has seven certified desktop flight simulators and one large Redbird LD immersive flight simlutor. These professional training simulators can be used for introducing students to the fundamentals of flying a single-engine airplane, provide scenario-based training, and because they are certified simulators be used to earn instructional hours toward pilot ratings.
Students with an interest in aviation can explore the Aerospace and Aviation industries & the many career opportunities they offer through the Introduction to Aerospace and Aviation course. Those interested in an opportunity to earn their Private Pilot Certification (often referred to simply as a “Pilot’s License”) can apply for the Pilot Certification Program. This course includes Ground instruction to prepare for the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam as well as Dual Flight Instruction in an aircraft with a Certified Flight Instructor in order to prepare for the FAA Oral & Practical exams required to receive Pilot Certification.
Plans are in the works to allow students who have earned their Private Pilot Certification to advance to an Instrument Flight Rating program, the next step toward a career as a professional pilot. The Redbird Flight Simulators will be especially useful in training student pilots to fly by instruments. The simulators can also be used for dual instruction, allowing the program to save on the coast of aircraft rental and students to train regardless of weather conditions or availability of aircraft.
The Aviation Department is new to Davis High School for the 2019-2020 school year.
