District Reminds Families and Students About Upcoming STAAR Assessments in April and May

Testing helps AISD gauge students’ strengths and areas for improvement. Families can join a virtual meeting to learn more about the state tests on April 1.

STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness), the state-required summative assessment, is more than a test. It is a tool to help teachers and families understand students’ strengths and areas for improvement. In addition, the results help leaders and teachers identify areas of support for each student to ensure students are able to demonstrate mastery of their learning.

School districts across the state and country continue to work to meet students’ needs despite COVID’s ongoing challenges.

“We recognize the impact of COVID on our students’ learning,” said Chief of Schools Dr. Katy Roede. “The state canceled the 2020 STAAR assessments, and then students were once again required to take these assessments in Spring 2021. It was their first time on campus for many students in over a year. We know that the past two years have included a multitude of disruptions to what we knew as a “normal” school year. We are encouraging progress on STAAR, not perfection.”

Roede shared that Aldine ISD schools are helping students by setting individualized goals, charting results, and celebrating progress.

The state test provides information about the amount of improvement or growth a student has made from the prior year to the current year. This data is combined with formative data to determine additional intervention or enrichment needed.

With very few exceptions, STAAR assessments are administered online. Students and families can access resources and online practice tests here.

Aldine ISD’s strategic priorities align with STAAR assessment results. These results will help ensure that all students receive the instruction and support needed to succeed academically.

“Despite COVID, we continue to meet the goals and priorities outlined in our strategic plan. Test data will help us continue to ensure all students have access to high-quality schools and learning experiences that prepare them for their futures. In Aldine ISD, we want to ensure that all students graduate with more than just a high school diploma but also with choices and opportunities,” said Roede.

To earn a diploma, high school students must pass five (5) STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) assessments.

Students who have passed all STAAR assessments are eligible for additional elective options.

Additional courses may be required to accelerate the learning for students who do not pass the STAAR assessments, limiting elective options.

Results of the STAAR/STAAR EOC assessments will be available on the Family Portal.
